The Department of Geography, JB College,Jorhat came into being as a separate department in 1979 with the joining of Shri HN Borah, the founder of this Department. Before the initiation of Pre-Degree and Under graduate courses, Commercial Geography had been taught in the Commerce faculty. General Geography at Higher Secondary level by two part time teachers were taught since 1972. With the increase in the number of students and responding to the demand of the time, Major course in the subject was opened in 1986. The first batch of the students came out successfully in the year 1988. Since then, quit a good number of students have been offering Geography, as a major subject. The Department also takes pride in producing 4 best graduates of Dibrugarh University (D.U) till date.
Most significantly, the Department also took initiative to open up, Post Graduate course after getting necessary permission from Dibrugarh University. Consequently, a full fledged department for PG teaching came into existence with effect from January 1995. This was the only Post graduate department of Geography under Dibrugarh University till 2008, when subsequently a PG Dept was opened in DU campus. The department has been producing excellent academic results, since its inception till today.
Another significant development in the history of the Geography Department is the introduction of the Semester System in the PG section in the year 2002.

GOAL:
To impart geographical learning at higher level of education particularly in the upper bhramaputra valley and its environs, in view of rendering services at multifarious levels to solve the socio economic and ecological problems of the are under specific interest, as well as of the Nation.
